Central New York Sales & Marketing Executives’ Sales & Marketing Excellence Awards designated Ed Riley as the 45th annual Crystal Ball recipient on April 7 at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown. The event was hosted by Advance Media New York President Tim Kennedy and Central New York Magazine writer Susan Kennedy.

Awarded annually, the Crystal Ball honors an individual or group for their contributions to the sales and marketing profession and for their endeavors in community development.

“Ed Riley embodies all of these things and more,” said CNYSME President Jaime Lawlor Wager. “His passion for what he does and what he’s brought to Central New York is nothing less than inspirational and we’re excited to add him to the list of esteemed recipients.”

In 2014, Riley founded Hotel Syracuse Restoration, LLC and later Brine Wells Development, LLC. He then executed the purchase, restoration, and renovation of the historic Hotel Syracuse, which reopened as the Marriott Syracuse Downtown in 2016.

Riley is a Syracuse native and attended CBA, Onondaga Community College Architectural Technology, and Syracuse University Architectural School. He remains active in the community, serving on several local organizations as a member of their board of directors, including the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, OCC Foundation Board, CNY Humane and Rescue Mission.

Among others honored at the event, Matt Sourwine, creative services manager at Advance Media New York, was one of 15 recipients of the Sales & Marketing Excellence Awards.

As a creative leader and award-winning designer, Sourwine has a proven ability in developing marketing strategies and designs that influence others. Under his leadership, the Advance Media New York creative department has won 7 international video awards and 20 New York State Creative Awards since 2020. Sourwine has more than 11 years of experience in the industry and a passion for marketing and design coupled with a love for focusing on the details that create standout messaging. A proud brand ambassador for Advance Media New York, Sourwine prides himself on staying true to a brand and loves working with clients in a variety of industries across Upstate New York and beyond.

“Matt and his award-winning creative services team catapulted our agency business in 2021 and it looks like we are going to outpace that growth in 2022,” said Michele Sardinia, vice president of advertising for Advance Media New York. “Matt leads from the front, always willing to lend a hand, to meet with clients and to rally around the best design elements.”

CNYSME has been recognizing excellence in the sales and marketing profession at their Annual Crystal Ball / SMEA Banquet since 1977. Founded in 1935, CNYSME is the area’s only organization focused on sales and marketing professionals.
